Travel Guides
Despite my penchant for travel and photography, I have resisted posting travel guides or location-based photography guides for a myriad of reasons. The most important one is probably that I'm not a good note/list taker, or planner and I'm perfectly happy to just get lost and wander aimlessly. And as a result, if I happen to find a spot I really like for photography, I was likely lost when I found it and can't tell you how to get there. And when this isn't the case, it probably means whatever spot I'm in I learned about from someone else's travel photography guide and so no one needs to hear it again from me. I also tend to forget to book things in advance, and as a result always miss some of the obvious stuff. I rarely travel just for photography, and I usually have my children along which means that if I am getting up at 5am on vacation there is a 50/50 chance I'm getting ready to rope drop Disney, rather than avoiding crowds at top photography locations. None of this makes for a good travel guide.
But then I realized that I really do sort of want a place to post pictures by location. I am not usually a fan of location-based image galleries. They sort of gives me "stuck in your neighbors living room for 3 hours watching a bad slide-show of their latest vacation" vibes. Plus, I love sequencing photos into stories or groupings that add context, and usually the most interesting context is not centered around location, but around theme, story, art, style, etc. The problem though, with never grouping photos by location is that the detail shots, the smaller stories, the images that literally belong to a single place, often end up getting passed over and never posted because they aren't part of another story.
So I decided to do some location-based blog posts, and I figure that if I'm going to post some photos by location then it seems silly not to share at least the random pieces of information I do know and/or remember about each place. If you are looking for all-encompassing, then this is not for you. If you are looking for a few random fun places to see/photograph/eat/stay/ whatever I can brain dump about a place along with some pictures that just don't really fit anywhere else, then it might be worth a read.
