the Secret Garden…

_MG_7729

Don’t these look like something straight out of a fairy tale? I photographed these 4 adorable girls at Sonnenburg Gardens last week. I was going for a storybook/fairy tale theme, and I couldn’t have picked a better location (or asked for better models)! Despite the fact that we got started nice and early, it was HOT by the time we were done, and these girls were real troopers. You can expect a second post from this session in the next day or so, but these were so much fun that I had to post them awhile.

the only thing Cuter…

The only thing cuter than a precious, 2 week old baby girl…

Is realizing that in addition to these two sweet girls, this family also has the 2 most adorable little boys ever.

Too Much Cuteness…

_MG_6889

Hey,I warned you! Isn’t she just too adorable? I was supposed to photograph this little munchkin as a brand-newborn, but she decided to make her grand entrance a few weeks early. So she’s now right around 8 weeks, and full of personality already.

And then there’s big sis. I know, I know- how do you get two little girls this cute all in the same family? I have to say though that for only 19 months, she was quite the cooperative little model. And of course I have billions more photos as cute as these that are waiting to be edited, but I couldn’t resist a sneak peak awhile. I’m sure there will be plenty more of these two gracing the pages of this site when I finally get a chance to edit the rest of the session!

In the studio…

So it doesn’t take long to figure out that I have a soft spot for on location, lifestyle portraits. Especially when it comes to toddlers. But that doesn’t mean that the studio is all bad. Actually sometimes is can be downright fun.

When Should I get my newborn’s pictures taken? (aka. they grow up fast)

Faehl-080213-014

I’ve had a bunch of newborn posts on here lately (with more to come), and one question I get a lot is when should newborn photos be taken. The easy answer to that is sometime within the first 2 weeks after their born. The real answer is it depends. Babies change fast. Really fast. And if what you’re looking to capture is your sweet, sleepy, sometimes dry-skin, still-yellowed-from-jaundice, brand newborn baby then the answer is absolutely within the first 2 weeks.

But while I’ve always been told by other photographers that you “have” to photograph newborns within the first 2 weeks, because after that it becomes way too hard to get the newborn poses I only partly agree. The truth is a 5 or 6 week old baby is going to be awake for more or their session than a brand newborn. But the good news is that while their awake they’re eyes are a little more focused, and they’re a lot more alert than a teeny-tiny one. And the even better news is that at 5 or 6 weeks they still sleep soundly enough to get some of those snuggly sweet newborn poses. The bad news is that babies change fast, and by 5 or 6 weeks, they might show less, or even very little resemblance to the teeny tiny infant that you held in your arms for the first time just a few weeks earlier.

So there you go- the photographer in me says that babies change so fast that you clearly should schedule a session every week for at least the first year of life :-). But since that’s generally unrealistic then it really depends on what kind of pictures you’re looking for. If all you want is the sweet, snuggly, quintessential newborn pictures then stick with the before 2 weeks rule- because its as close to a guarantee as can be given when working with infants, that those are the images you’ll leave with. But on the other hand, I’ve had some people point out that you will likely have more pictures of your little one in the first few moments, or days after birth than you probably will in the rest of his or her life combined. And maybe that’s enough incentive to wait a few weeks, until your little one starts to have a little more expression, and a little more personality, and really aim for the best of both worlds.

But the warning I’ll leave you with is that whatever timeframe you prefer- don’t wait too long. Because in just a few short months they’ll change so fast. And as the little cutie  pictured above is happy to demonstrate, by 3 months, they’re all baby, and there’s not much left to remind you of the newborn they once were. Except pictures.

Not my usual subjects…

I was away on vacation the past couple of weeks, and while away we couldn’t resist a trip to the zoo for my 2 year old. Ok, who am I kidding, I love the zoo, the trip wasn’t for her at all- it was really just an excuse to practice my animal photography and give my zoom lens a workout. But either way we all had fun, which was what counts. And the animals were either amazingly cooperative or I’ve just been photographing way too many active toddlers lately, because comparatively these guys were a breeze to photograph.

3 Weeks New…

Because apparently this is newborn central around here, I couldn’t resist a couple of snuggly girl pictures…

A boy and His Dog

_MG_5632

This little guy is 5 weeks old, and one of the sweetest, most chill babies you will ever meet. I don’t think he fussed his entire session. I really shouldn’t even be proofing this session yet, because I have a bunch of others in front of it, but I saw this frame and I just couldn’t help myself. Because in addition to having an incredibly co-operative baby, these parents also have an incredibly co-operative dog. And this moment was too sweet not to share awhile.

From The Archives

Faehl-100216-0240

So clearly this is from the archives, because even up here in Rochester it doesn’t snow in July. This was shot back in February and is on my top 10 list of all time favorite pictures. This girl was such a sport- she went traipsing through the snow, not only in a sleeveless dress but completely barefoot so that I could get this shot!

From the Archives: The Comfy Chair

_MG_4664 Faehl-100216-0091-v001

These are both images from the archives (taken at different times), but I thought that they were so much fun I had to pull them out and pair them together. Big comfy chairs are one of my all time favorite props, and they tend to work with almost any style of session. The kids love them too- neither of these images were posed- apparently the chairs looked comfy to the girls too!
